Family Connections

Familyof5Foundation conducts monthly events within Rochdale Village catering to the youth as well as the elderly so that families can come out and enjoy time well spent as a community. Whether outside on the Baseball Field or in the Rochdale Ballroom, hosted events will always include good food, good times, and more importantly, love, laughter and positive memories for the community.

Annual Father’s Day Cookout

In our community there is a stigma that we lack the presence of postivie adult male father figures. Familyof5Foundation worked to prove the opposite and chose Father’s Day to celebrate one another for standing by our responsibilities as fathers and community leaders within our neighborhood. What started out as one grill and eight friends at our brother Shamell’s house..became an annual Father’s Day gathering at Valley Stream Park consisting of ten grills, fish fryers, cotton candy machine and a bouncy house for the children.

Every event became bigger and bigger where families came from other boroughs, and even (in) from other states to join in on the celebratory gatherings.

Community Cleanup

Our Founding Members Royal Hubbard and Craig Clinkscales worked in Rochdale Maintenance since their early 20’s. Their job in a sense became their passion; “Cleaning Up The Community”. Taking it beyond custodial duties, they decided to become the caretakers of the surrounding areas that they called home. This sparked the idea of creating a foundation. The Familyof5Foundation was created based on the idea of “cleaning up and caring for” Rochdale’s community. Which encompasses not only its grounds but the family and residents who reside there as well.

Summer Movies at the Park

What better way for families (young & old alike) to come out and enjoy a good movie and great food alongside their loved ones and friends. Rochdale Village (itslef) once had a movie theater in the 1980’s. Unfortunately, it was closed down. As brothers and sisters who remember those days, we took it upon ourselves to bring back the movie nights in a way that was safe and fun for all ages.

For the last year FamilyofFiveFoundation have been hosting “Fam5 Movie Nights” on the Rochdale Baseball Field. We provide lawn chairs, hot dogs, burgers, cotton candy and juice boxes for the kids. Parents are given the opportunity to enjoy the movie along with their children or the ability to leave their kids in a safe warm environment should they need to run errands. In addition to food, we provide a positive cinematic movie experience hosted on a 24′ movie screen with surround sound audio.

South Jamaica Health and Wellness Expo

The Health and Wellness Expo seeks to educate and empower residents of greater South Jamaica to take ownership of there physical and mental health. The Covid pandemic not only isolated people around the world, but it served as a mirror of our personal health. Studies have consistently shown that underlying health issues transform the Covid virus from a mild cold to a deadly illness.

Unfortunately, residents in certain communities were disproportionately affected by the virus. The underlying health issues of obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes have historically plagued communities of color. Black men have a 70% higher rate of developing high risk prostate cancer. African American women have a 31% breast cancer mortality rate. The mortality rate is highest of any racial or ethnic group. Although the stats can be terrifying, there are preventative measures when implemented strategically that can turn the tide in a healthy direction.

For most, living a healthy lifestyle is not an easy task. Some people aren’t sure on the proper building blocks of nutrition, exercise, talking to a therapist or simply setting up annual checkups with their physician.

The Health and Wellness Expo will bring the necessary teaching tools to live a healthy lifestyle in a very relatable format. A combination of health professionals, vendors, fitness experts, and health screening units, will deliver an empowering array of life changing and powerful teaching tools to get residents on the right track for a healthy lifestyle.
